Glasses, Exercise, Alcohol and Skin Treatments After Rhinoplasty: The First Four Weeks

Written by: EDITION Plastic Surgery | Published: 10/6/2026

When can you wear glasses, go back to the gym, drink alcohol or book a skin treatment after rhinoplasty in Korea? The intervals Edition Plastic Surgery in Gangnam gives its patients, why each one exists, and how follow-up works once you are home.

Hello from Edition Plastic Surgery Clinic & Dermatology in Gangnam, Seoul. If you are travelling to Seoul for rhinoplasty, you may have planned the surgery day and the flight in detail and still find yourself wondering about small things once you are back home: Can I put my glasses on? Is a run allowed? What about a glass of wine at a family dinner?

For rhinoplasty at Edition, most of these questions come down to a handful of dates. Glasses can rest on the nose again from about 4 weeks after surgery. Light exercise can restart at about 2 weeks, but strenuous training should be put off for 4 to 6 weeks. Alcohol should be avoided for about 4 weeks, and skin treatments are recommended only after a recovery period of about 4 weeks. In other words, the first month after rhinoplasty is the period most of these rules are built around — and if you travelled to Seoul for surgery, you may be spending much of that month back at home.

Why does the first month matter so much after rhinoplasty?

In rhinoplasty, the nasal bones, cartilage and skin are reshaped and then have to settle into their new position. Early on, the tissues are still swollen and the reshaped framework has not yet become firm. Pressure, a knock, or a rise in blood pressure during this stage can affect swelling and, in some cases, the shape that is still settling. That is the general medical reasoning behind every interval in this article.

The other reason is practical. For patients who live abroad, Edition often recommends staying in Korea for about 7 to 10 days. That covers the earliest stage: the nasal packing is removed on day 2, and Edition's guidance for returning to your usual daily and social routine is usually from around day 7. The rules that run to week 4 and beyond, however, will mostly be followed after you have flown home, without a clinic down the street. Knowing the dates before you leave makes those weeks far easier to manage.

When can I wear glasses again after rhinoplasty?

At Edition, glasses can be worn again from about 4 weeks after rhinoplasty. Until then, the frame should not rest on the bridge of the nose.

The reason is weight in a small area. A pair of glasses presses on exactly the part of the nose that was reshaped — the bridge where the nasal bones and any graft or implant sit. Before the tissues have firmed up, that steady pressure can leave a mark or, in some cases, affect how the bridge settles. Sunglasses count as glasses here, including on the flight home.

If you rely on glasses every day, raise it at your consultation rather than after surgery. The surgeon can tell you which alternative suits your eyes and your particular operation. It is one of the questions that is much easier to solve before you fly to Seoul than after you land at home.

When can I go back to exercise, and what counts as "light"?

Light exercise can usually restart at about 2 weeks after rhinoplasty. Strenuous exercise should wait until 4 to 6 weeks.

The difference between the two is mainly how hard the heart is working and whether the face is at risk of being hit. Walking at an easy pace is the typical example of light activity. Running, heavy weights, high-intensity classes, swimming laps, contact sports and anything with a ball flying toward your face are usually treated as strenuous. Exercise raises blood pressure and blood flow to the face, which can increase swelling, and a direct knock to a nose that is still healing is the outcome everyone wants to avoid.

The 4-to-6-week range is a range for a reason. Where you land in it depends on how your own recovery is going, which is why it is worth asking at a follow-up check, or sending an update, before going back to full training.

When is it safe to drink alcohol after nose surgery?

Edition asks rhinoplasty patients to wait about 4 weeks before drinking alcohol.

Alcohol widens blood vessels, which tends to make facial swelling worse, and it can affect how the body recovers in the early weeks. There is also a practical overlap: after surgery, Edition prescribes antibiotics, pain medication and an ointment. Alcohol and medication are not a combination to experiment with, so the simplest approach is to keep alcohol out of the picture while you are still taking them and until the 4-week mark.

Have you read a different rule for another procedure and wondered which one applies? Rules for different procedures can look contradictory if you read them side by side. The next section explains why.

Why are the rules different from what I read for a thread lift?

Because they are different procedures with different recovery. Edition also performs thread lifting, and for that procedure the guidance on alcohol and strenuous exercise is about 2 weeks. For rhinoplasty, alcohol is about 4 weeks and strenuous exercise is 4 to 6 weeks.

Rhinoplasty reshapes bone and cartilage and takes longer to settle, so the intervals are longer. If you are reading several articles while you plan, check which procedure each rule belongs to. Mixing the two is an easy mistake, and it usually leads to doing something too early after rhinoplasty, not too late.

Do I need to stop smoking, and when?

Yes. Edition asks patients to stop smoking 2 weeks before rhinoplasty. Supplements such as omega-3, vitamins and red ginseng are stopped 1 week before surgery as well.

Smoking narrows blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the skin and tissue that are healing. That matters in any operation, and it matters more when the nose is rebuilt with your own tissue — Edition uses autologous material such as septal cartilage, rib cartilage and dermis, and transplanted tissue generally needs a good blood supply to take. How long to stay smoke-free after surgery is something to confirm with your surgeon at consultation, as it depends on the operation that was done.

When can I book skin treatments such as skin boosters?

Skin treatments are possible after rhinoplasty, but Edition recommends allowing a recovery period of about 4 weeks first. Dr. Daehee Han answered this question from a patient in writing (translated from Korean):

"Skin treatments are possible after nose surgery, but I recommend having them after a sufficient recovery period of about 4 weeks."

He also explained why some patients consider skin treatment at all: once the nose gives the face a more defined, three-dimensional line, the quality of the skin around it becomes more noticeable. Whether you need anything is a separate decision, made at consultation. For patients who travel, the useful point is the timing — a skin treatment belongs on a later visit, not squeezed into the same week as your nose surgery.

What does the first month look like week by week?

The table below puts the dates from this article in one place. The intervals are the ones Edition gives its rhinoplasty patients. Recovery differs between individuals, so treat the table as the starting point for a conversation with your surgeon, not as a fixed promise.

RuleWhen at EditionWhy it exists (general medical reasoning)
Stop smoking2 weeks before surgerySmoking reduces blood flow to healing tissue
Stop omega-3, vitamins, red ginseng1 week before surgerySome supplements can affect bleeding
Nasal packing removedDay 2Part of the planned early recovery
Return to usual daily and social routineAround day 7The usual point for getting back to everyday life
Stay in Korea often recommended (living abroad)About 7 to 10 daysCovers the earliest stage of recovery
Light exerciseFrom about 2 weeksRaises blood pressure less than hard training
Glasses resting on the noseFrom about 4 weeksAvoids pressure on the reshaped bridge
AlcoholFrom about 4 weeksAlcohol widens blood vessels and can worsen swelling
Skin treatmentsAfter about 4 weeks of recoveryLets the nose settle before treating the skin around it
Strenuous exercise, contact sportsFrom 4 to 6 weeksHigher strain and a risk of a knock to the nose

The supplement and smoking lines come first because they happen before you travel. Read them when you are booking, not when you arrive.

What if something looks or feels different after I am home?

Some changes during recovery are expected and temporary. One patient asked Dr. Daehee Han about skin on part of the nose that had changed colour after surgery — looking bruised whenever the temperature changed — and that felt numb. His written answer (translated from Korean):

"After nose surgery, the skin may temporarily look a different colour or feel numb during the recovery process. Depending on how long it has been since surgery and how strong the symptoms are, it sometimes needs to be checked. If you tell us when you had surgery and send photos of how it looks now, or visit us, we can advise you in more detail."

That is the practical model for patients abroad: note the date of surgery, take clear photos in good light, and send them with a short description. Edition offers real-time recovery consultation through KakaoTalk, and runs a WhatsApp number for English-speaking patients. Medical and surgical consultation, the operation and follow-up are handled by Dr. Daehee Han himself. General cost enquiries are handled by the patient coordinator. Your follow-up schedule is explained at consultation.

Pain that suddenly gets worse, a knock to the nose, increasing redness or swelling, or anything that worries you is a reason to get in touch straight away rather than wait for the next scheduled check.

When will I know how my nose will finally look?

Not in the first month. By week 4, many of the everyday restrictions in this article have lifted, but swelling, especially at the tip, may not have fully settled yet. Your follow-up schedule is explained at consultation.

It helps to separate two ideas that are easy to blur. "I can live normally again" arrives within weeks. "This is the final shape" comes much later. Planning your first month around the first idea, and your expectations around the second, makes the whole recovery feel less uncertain.

Frequently asked questions

Q1) Can I wear sunglasses on the flight home after rhinoplasty?

A1) Sunglasses rest on the bridge of the nose in the same way as other glasses, so the same rule applies: glasses can be worn again from about 4 weeks after surgery. Ask your surgeon before the flight if you are unsure.

Q2) Is walking allowed before the 2-week mark?

A2) Light exercise can usually restart at about 2 weeks. Before then, keep activity gentle and check with your surgeon at follow-up about what is right for your recovery.

Q3) When can I go back to running or lifting weights after rhinoplasty?

A3) At Edition, strenuous exercise should wait until 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Where you fall in that range depends on your own recovery, so confirm before returning to full training.

Q4) Can I have one drink at a wedding three weeks after surgery?

A4) Edition asks rhinoplasty patients to wait about 4 weeks before drinking alcohol, so three weeks falls inside that period. If a big event is coming up, it is worth mentioning it when you choose your surgery date.

Q5) I had a thread lift guide that said two weeks for alcohol. Which one is right?

A5) Both, for their own procedure. At Edition, about 2 weeks applies to thread lifting and about 4 weeks applies to rhinoplasty. Follow the rule for the surgery you had.

Q6) How do I contact the clinic about my recovery once I am back home?

A6) Edition offers real-time recovery consultation through KakaoTalk and has a WhatsApp number for English-speaking patients. Send the date of your surgery, clear photos and a short description of what you notice.

Recovery and results differ between individuals. Please make decisions after a full consultation with a specialist.

Rhinoplasty may cause swelling, bruising, nasal congestion, reduced sensation or temporary skin discoloration around the nose, asymmetry, and infection. The nasal tip may also drop gradually over time. The degree and duration vary from person to person, so please consult your doctor thoroughly before deciding.

Thread lifting may cause swelling, tightness, bruising, a palpable thread sensation, temporary bumpiness, and slight asymmetry. These usually settle over time, but if discomfort persists, please have the area examined. The degree and duration vary from person to person, so please consult your doctor thoroughly before deciding.
