The difference is where the eye is opened. Epicanthoplasty addresses the epicanthal fold covering the inner corner of the eye to widen the eye horizontally toward the inside, while lateral canthoplasty opens the outer corner to make the eye look longer outward. Which direction is needed depends on whether your eyes look far apart or short, so we decide after diagnosis.

It is considered when a pronounced epicanthal fold covers the inner corner of the eye and the eyes look far apart, or when the front part of the double eyelid crease is hidden by the fold and looks unnatural. Conversely, if the epicanthal fold is mild and the distance between the eyes is relatively narrow, we do not recommend it. It needs to be assessed together with facial proportions, so we will make that judgment during the consultation.

If only a double eyelid is created when the epicanthal fold is pronounced, the front of the crease can be hidden by the fold and look as if it is cut off partway. In such cases, performing canthoplasty at the same time lets the crease flow naturally from the front. However, it is not necessary for everyone, so the decision is made after checking the degree of the epicanthal fold.

During recovery, the incision site stays red for a while and gradually fades, often becoming barely visible in 2–3 months. However, how scars heal varies with skin type and constitution, so follow-up is necessary.

It helps to avoid irritating the surgical site and to keep using sun protection even after it has healed. It is best to avoid rubbing your eyes hard or forcibly removing scabs. At follow-up visits, we check the condition of the scar and guide you on care appropriate to each stage.

If canthoplasty is overdone, the inner corners of the eyes can open sharply and make your look appear harsh, so at Edition we design within a moderate range. We look at the angle of the outer corners and the curve of the lower eyelid together, explain how your look will change, and then decide on the extent.

It is difficult to fully restore an area that has been opened once, and depending on its condition, restorative surgery may be considered. That is why it is important from the start to open only as much as needed. The options available depend on your current condition, so we will check during consultation.

How far the eye can be widened is determined by the structure at the outer corner and the laxity of the lower eyelid. Widening it excessively can expose too much of the white of the eye or create a tendency to revert, so we design within a range that can be maintained. We will explain the specific extent after diagnosis.

It is considered when the eyes look short vertically or look heavy because they are covered by the lower eyelids. After surgery, conjunctival swelling or redness may occur, which can improve after about 1–2 weeks. Whether it is needed is judged by the curve of the lower eyelid and how much of the white of the eye is visible.

Sutures are usually removed after 7 days, and until then it is best to keep water and cosmetics away from the surgical site. When you can resume depends on how the wound heals, so we will advise you after checking your eyes at your follow-up visit.

Yes. If you already have a double eyelid or do not want a crease, epicanthoplasty (Mongolian fold correction) can be performed on its own. However, whether the canthoplasty alone will give the change in impression you want depends on the structure of the inner corner of your eye, so we confirm this during the consultation.

If re-adhesion has occurred, we check the condition of the adhered area and the extent of the previous incision to determine the correction approach. However, because the tissue has already changed, there is more to assess than in a first surgery, and the range of predictable results also differs. Knowing when and how your previous surgery was done is helpful for the consultation.
