Frequently Asked Questions
Is functional rhinoplasty covered by insurance?
When undergoing surgery classified as a nasal disease, you may be eligible for insurance coverage depending on your private and actual expense insurance. Only disease-related surgeries/procedures for treatment purposes are eligible for actual expense insurance, and this is not limited to this hospital. The applicability and scope of coverage may vary depending on the terms and conditions of the actual expense insurance policy subscribed to by the medical consumer.
What is a deviated septum?
The nasal septum is a cartilage that supports the center of the nose. If this septal cartilage is deviated, airflow narrows on one side, often causing rhinitis, sinusitis, and a crooked nose line. Septal correction can straighten a deviated septum and simultaneously improve the nose line.
What is nasal valve stenosis?
If the nasal valve, which controls breathing, collapses at the upper part of the nasal tip, the breathing area narrows, causing nasal congestion and often a low nasal bridge. Breathing can become easier through surgery to widen the narrowed nasal valve.
Can hypertrophic rhinitis also be treated with surgery?
Yes, it is possible. When chronic rhinitis progresses over a long period, the mucosa or bony structure of the inferior turbinate, which is an internal nasal structure, enlarges, causing various symptoms such as nasal congestion, snoring, and olfactory dysfunction. Through radiofrequency mucosa reduction surgery and other treatments, we can secure an enlarged airway.
Can functional rhinoplasty and cosmetic rhinoplasty be performed simultaneously?
Yes, this is the core of Edition's functional rhinoplasty. By performing nasal disease surgery and rhinoplasty at once, both the external and internal aspects of the nose can be corrected, leading to highly satisfactory results. Both function and aesthetics are resolved with a single surgery.
How long is the recovery period?
The surgery time is approximately 1 hour, and stitches are removed after 5-7 days. Outpatient treatment is required 2-3 times, and hospitalization is not necessary. Daily life can be resumed after 7-14 days.

How do you tell whether nasal congestion is caused by the septum or by rhinitis?
Nasal congestion has several causes, such as a deviated septum, a narrowed nasal valve, or enlarged inferior turbinates, and two or more often overlap. We check the internal structure of the nose with 3D CT and nasal endoscopy to identify the cause and confirm the disease grade. Because the surgical method depends on the cause, diagnosis comes first.
Is a crooked-looking nose also caused by the septum?
When the septal cartilage is deviated, the outer nasal line often looks crooked as well. In such cases, correcting the internal structure through septoplasty can also improve the visible nasal line. However, whether the problem lies in the nasal bone itself or in the soft tissue can only be determined by distinguishing them with a 3D CT scan.
I've already had rhinoplasty, but my nose has been blocked since then. Can surgery help?
Cases where nasal problems developed after rhinoplasty are also candidates for functional rhinoplasty. We check structural changes from previous surgery and the condition of any existing implant with 3D CT before planning functional and shape correction. Whether it is possible and its scope depend on the condition of your nose, so we will explain during consultation.
I broke my nasal bone in an accident. Am I a candidate for surgery?
Cases where the nasal bone became crooked or fractured in an accident are also candidates for functional rhinoplasty. We confirm the shape in which the bone healed after the fracture and any septal deviation with a 3D CT scan, then determine the scope of correction. Even if a long time has passed, you can find out whether surgery is possible through a consultation.
How does insurance claiming work?
Before surgery, we determine the grade of the condition with 3D CT and endoscopy, and check whether and to what extent coverage applies under the terms of your private medical insurance. After surgery, you can obtain the documents required by your insurer, such as a medical certificate and surgery confirmation, from the clinic and submit them to your insurer, who will pay out after review. Whether a claim is paid and the amount depend on your policy and the insurer's review.
I snore heavily. Can surgery help?
When enlarged inferior turbinates narrow the airway, nasal congestion may be accompanied by snoring and a reduced sense of smell, and there are methods such as radiofrequency turbinate reduction to open the airway. However, snoring can also have causes outside the nose, so the cause must first be identified through examination. The degree of improvement varies from person to person.
How is it different from having functional and cosmetic surgery separately?
Having them separately means going through anesthesia and recovery twice. Performing surgery for a nasal condition and rhinoplasty at once reduces that process to once, and allows the external line to be designed at the same time as the internal structure of the nose is corrected. However, whether both surgeries can be performed together depends on the condition of the nose and the severity of the condition.
Will I have two CT scans, before and after surgery?
We plan the surgery with a pre-operative 3D CT scan and, after surgery, compare the results to check changes in both the internal structure and the external appearance. This process is meant to confirm not only the visible result but how your airway has actually changed.
How are aftercare and follow-up handled after functional rhinoplasty?
Regular follow-up takes place at 1 day, 5 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery, and in between you can ask about your progress via WhatsApp. Recovery speed varies from person to person, and swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness may occur, so follow-up is necessary.
What side effects can occur with functional rhinoplasty?
There are complications that can generally occur after surgery, such as bleeding, infection, and inflammation, and their degree varies from person to person. Even when functional surgery is performed at the same time, the degree of improvement in nasal congestion varies from person to person. Please decide after a thorough consultation.
